Lançamento da Campanha "Proteja Nosso Ar!"

Lançamento da Campanha "Proteja Nosso Ar!" (September, 21)

Concurso de eco Pipas temáticos Earth Guardians

Participamos do concurso global de eco pipas temáticos
do Guardiões da Terra com 2 pipas.
Veja como foi.

Materiais utilizados:

- Bambu (3 varetas)

"Proteja Nosso Futuro! - Proteja Nosso Ar!"

"Protect Our Air!"  Campaign (September, 21)
Earth Guardians Kite

Materials used:

- Bamboo (3 sticks)
- Silk paper sheets (5 sheets)
- Water, wheat and cassava (to glue)
- Coffee Powder (for dark ink)
- Sunflower with mature seeds (tied as tail)

We did two kites: a larger one with sticks of 1 meter long and another smaller.
We use natural materials as much as possible (sticks, glue, paint and tail that launched seeds by air).
We left for kite flying today, at 5:30 AM. We wanted a good wind.
We had some technical problems with the white kite, but that blue was very far and high. Carrying the message of Earth Guardians:

"Protect Our Future! Protect Our Air!"

Earth Day, Earth Guardians Brazil

(Posted on:
http://www.earthguardians.org/engage/2015/5/11/earth-day-in-brazil/)

For Earth Day, Earth Guardians Brazil planted native crops in school gardens at Emeb Aura Soares in the tradition of Brazil's indigenous peoples. Pumpkins, corn, gourds, and sunflowers were among the plants that youth planted, and classes will follow the process to see these plants sprout and grow!

Following the planting, Earth Guardians continued to celebrate Indigenous April by studying three young leaders who are developing important actions in the environmental movement.

These leaders include Jeguaka Mirim, a young writer, illustrator and indigenous rights activist as well as Itzcuauhtli and Xiuhtezcatl Martinez, hip hop performers and directors of Earth Guardians.

Brazilian youth are asking questions of these leaders and will receive responses via video that will be shown to the entire school!

Palavras de Xiuhtzecatl Tonathiuh, no evento "Bioneers 2014" (Pt-Br)

<< Bom dia a todos, meu nome é Xiuhtzecatl Tonathiuh.

Obrigado!>>

Xiuhtezcatl aos 6 anos de idade

Obrigado!>>

RYSE: Activating the Youth-Led Climate Movement

"My name is Xiuhtezcatl Martinez and I am an indigenous eco hip hop activist and the Youth Director of Earth Guardians
As a 14-year-old growing up in Colorado, I’ve seen the effects of climate change firsthand. Youth from around the world know that climate change is the defining issue of our time, and our generation will be the most affected. Many of us feel despair when it comes to dealing with climate change because we don't know where to start. We are ready to contribute to the solution, we just need the tools, confidence and momentum to get started.

 The Opportunity

Our schools are not offering us the kind of education we need to deal with the world we are going to be left with.RYSE (Rising Youth for a Sustainable Earth) a project of Earth Guardians will train young solutionaries to take a leadership role in the climate movement instead of waiting for others to lead. RYSE trainings will give youth the tools, skills and support to implement sustainable projects and transform their communities. This is an opportunity for youth to turn fear and despair about the kind of world they are inheriting into momentum and progress. Your contribution will help over 500 youth become active climate leaders.

The Vision

  • Empowered young leaders will lead projects, campaigns, and collective actions that disrupt the global leadership status quo. We will prove that our generation is not interested in waiting for others to take action. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.
  • We will share our progress at the UN Climate Talks in Paris in December of 2015, demonstrating that we will protect our future no matter what. Our message to world leaders: JOIN US!

RYSE Councils

The RYSE Youth Council is made up of 13 exceptional youth leaders from diverse backgrounds We are still welcoming applications for the Youth Council.
The Youth Council will develop their skills as organizers, facilitators, and community leaders while working together as the principal decision makers for the RYSE movement.
The RYSE Wisdom Council is made up of 13 seasoned leaders and activists from diverse geographic, ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. With experience in arts, sciences, social justice, movement-building, and climate solutions, this multifaceted council will support the youth-led shift toward a healthy, just and sustainable planet.

Phase 1: Wildfire Training

In March of 2015, the impressive movement builders of the Wildfire Project will facilitate 4 days of workshops and trainings for the RYSE Youth Council. Wildfire is a democratic, front lines, action-oriented team of organizers and facilitators. They recognize times of crisis as vital opportunities for improving life on earth. They fuse political education, skills training, group development, and direct organizing. Their team leader is the global trainer for 350.org. They have supported a diverse range of social and ecological justice movements: from Tar Sands Action and PowerShift to Dream Defenders and the Divest Student Network. We’re working with some solid people.

Phase 2: RYSE and Shine

In April of 2015, Youth Council Leaders will unite to collectively carry out and lead an organized national action: RYSE and Shine. This powerful, unified action will mobilize and inspire participants in addition to jump-starting the momentum of the movement.

Phase 3: Community Solutions Activation Trainings

In Summer of 2015, RYSE Youth Council Leaders across the country will put their new skills to use and organize local trainings and events within their communities. Day 1 of their trainings will focus on analysis of key issues, organizing, and leadership strategy. Day 2 will be dedicated to collaboratively crafting a plan for climate solutions using innovative facilitation techniques to implement in their communities.

Phase 4: Activation

Time to RYSE! Leaders and communities will put their climate solutions into action. Shovels will be in soil planting trees and gardens, solar panels will cover school rooftops, and new solar-powered lights will line park sidewalks. We anticipate ingenuity and never-before-seen solutions. Youth leaders will discover the creative, collaborative leaders within. With the tools and connections from RYSE, youth will recognize themselves as leaders, catalysts for change and a part of our greater global community.

Pledge to Be a Climate Leader

(Eat-Squat-Lee), and I am an 11-year-old indigenous eco hip-hop activist with Earth Guardians. Over the past year I’ve learned more about the urgency of our climate crisis and I worry about what kind of world my generation will be left with if we don’t cap carbon emissions and switch to clean, safe, renewable energy.
I was tired of being ignored by our world leaders, so on Oct. 27, I went on a 45-day silence strike for climate action. What came next gave me hope! I saw people all over the world joining in and pledging to be climate leaders. We’ve been waiting for our leaders to solve this problem but now I see that we are the real leaders.
This is a critical time in the global climate movement leading up to the Paris 2015 United Nation Climate Talks. Real leadership must come from us right now. Pledge below and join the global movement for a healthy, sustainable planet for us and future generations. Wear a green wrist band in solidarity with this pledge and post photos using hashtags #SilenceIntoAction and #EarthGuardians.
I will personally deliver this pledge—with a goal of 1 million signatures—with your name on it to Ban Ki-moon and other world leaders at the Paris Climate Talks in December.

>> I pledge to join or lead actions that will build momentum for a binding agreement at the Paris 2015 Climate Conference.

>> I pledge to vote with my dollars and consider the ways my personal decisions and investments demonstrate a commitment to fight climate change.

>> If I am of voting age, I pledge to vote for candidates who show, through action, a serious commitment to stopping the climate crisis.

>> I will share this pledge and my story of how I’m being a climate leader with friends and family via social media (hashtag #silenceintoaction), e-mail and in person.

Amor e Paz.

‘We are All Indigenous to Somewhere’: Teen Talks About Cultural Reconnection

By: Xiuhtezcatl Roske-Martine (2/26/2014)

An incredibly important aspect of life that many people have neglected and even forgotten is our connection with the Earth. This loss of respect and sense of oneness with the Earth and each other is endangering our future. We are literally destroying our own life support systems by our over consumptive lifestyles that are supporting the corporate industries and fueling our climate and environmental crises.

Throughout history, the indigenous people of the world have carried a deep respect and connection for the Earth, but this connection has disappeared over time because of our changing social structures and severe oppression of the Native peoples. We used to see ourselves as a part of this natural world, a mere piece of the puzzle on this great planet, connected to the web of life. We did not conquer the Earth, but lived in balance with it, and gave back to it with ceremonies, prayers and by being guardians of our sacred lands.

Speaking as a descendant of the Aztec Mexican people of Mexico and being raised in our ceremonial ways, I have had the incredible opportunity to connect deeply with the nature and to travel to different parts of the world through my work meeting with indigenous leaders. They share stories of how they are fighting to keep their cultures alive, and pass their knowledge and wisdom to the next generation, so that their culture and their heritage will not fade away as so many others have.

In our world today, the elders’ messages often fall on deaf ears because our social system has changed and youth are not encouraged to develop a relationship with the Earth. Instead, the youth are spending hours on electronic devices, consuming drugs and alcohol and taking them further and further away from their cultures.

“Consumption in general is devastating to our culture. It is directly going against our traditional teachings of not having more than what we need,” said Gracy Horne, an organizer of the World Peace and Prayer Day runs, and daughter of Arvol Looking Horse, Indigenous spokesperson and leader. “Nobody listened to us when we were young. No one asked us how we felt about the world. I started organizing peace runs when I was 20, and people still didn’t understand why you would sacrifice for the Earth. Now, I am seeing more high school kids that are becoming active in their community and know about the effects of Fracking and know about environmentalism and are taking action.”

We are living in an age of cultural crisis where the fabric of every indigenous culture is on the brink of disappearance from the Earth forever. Our modern world and the belief systems that operate it have literally consumed our connection with each other and the Earth. Indigenous people all over the world are still being robbed and bought off of their lands, their languages, their cultures and their lives.

“There's an Indian word, ‘Tekoa,’ which is used for ‘village’ or ‘territory.’ But a better translation is ‘way of being,’” said Levi Moises, 25, a youth leader for the Earth Guardian’s in Brazil.  “For indigenous people here, the connection to the place where they live is in itself a major achievement. But modern society does not accept this, and always requires that the space be commodified, tamed, or changed to the fullest. In short, we remain pillaged. Our territory (and resources) are stolen by the state and sold to entrepreneurs.”

Roske-Martinez with Kerrianne Cox, Xavier Rudd, Luka Lesson on a panel at the Uplift Festival in Australia
In my journey to Australia in December 2013, I connected with the Aboriginal peoples, who have been natives of Australia for thousands of years. I learned that their rich and unique culture, language, and tradition came to an abrupt halt in 1788 when the British invaded Australia. Since then, hundreds of thousands were massacred to make room for the white settlers and agricultural land. Half of the Aborigine population was killed because of diseases brought by the settlers. In New South Wales, more than 8,000 Aboriginal children were taken from their families and brought to institutions and foster families where they were abused and often used as slaves. They were known as the Stolen Generation, and lost a deep connection to themselves and their heritage.

Many children that were “half castes” were taken from their homes with the belief that their brown skin could be bred out of them through relations with the white people that invaded them. That oppression still lingers in the generations that are born today.

Kerrianne Cox is a well-known Aboriginal artist and leader in the rising movement of the Native peoples of the Earth.

“Many Aboriginal youth are born into violent, fragmented families. They are not given the opportunity or the voice to restore their ancient culture. I made a choice not to live like that. I allowed my songs to be my healer, and saw how my message could touch other people. Oppression of our people has come to a critical point where we have hit rock-bottom; the only way from here is up,” she said.

“I really feel that there is a beautiful opening that is happening with the healing and restoration of our old culture. I’m seeing it across our land. The country is waking up. We might have been lost, we may have been asleep, but we are united, and they cannot break us,” said Cox.

Until we realize that we are one people, we are all connected, and we all depend on each other and the Earth for the survival of humanity, we will continue down this path of separation and disconnect. We must reconnect with our indigenous roots because no matter where we are from, or who we are, we are ALL indigenous to somewhere. And despite the injustice and oppression, the Native people are claiming their rights and taking back their land and their honor. They are defending their sacred homes, and fighting for justice and equality. The movement is building and many indigenous people will no longer stand idly by.
An awakening is on the rise!

DO IT FOR US!

"A question that is asked so often, is "What can I do to make a difference?"
In order to make a difference, you don't have to what I have done like suing the federal government, or shutting down County Commisioner’s meetings, or giving up a lot of free time to educate your generation about our crisis, though, those are all great! To be an Earth Guardian, you don't have to go live in the woods, and hunt for animals and live without technology and electricity. I tell people all over the world, that in order to change the world, you have to start by changing yourself, and your daily habits. You have to change the way you are relating to and treating the Earth. Cut your own carbon footprint, change your own lifestyle. Make a difference in your own community.
It all starts with you, and you have to start small, then grow and grow and grow now more than ever, if our generation is going to have a chance of inheriting a healthy Earth! It starts with this:

Every Tuesday, I will be posting this list of "50 Simple Things you can do to Cut your Carbon Footprint"

I want everyone who sees this to like it, share it, and choose something on this list that you are willing to do for this week, to make a difference and be an Earth Guardian. Whatever it is you choose on the list, post it in the comment box below. Start with one, then next week, pick something else, and the next week another thing off the list and before you know it, you will be healthier, happier, and have a MUCH smaller impact on the planet. If all 5,459 people that like this page were to commit to one thing every week, it would be making a BIG difference. What's your incentive? Your children, your nieces, nephews, cousins, and the generation that is to come. We have the power to change the fate of humanity and IT STARTS WITH YOU!

Here's the Link:

Remember to comment every week, and know, you are doing it for the generations to come... those unborn. Please Share widely! Can you imagine the impact we will have if we inspire everyone to live more lightly, we could cut our carbon output in half!

Do it for us!"

Sustainability is a life style - Not a solar panel

My name is Xiuhtezcatl Martinez and I am a 13-year-old Indigenous Environmental Activist. I have been speaking out about our environmental and climate crisis since I was six years old. I am the executive youth director of a nonprofit organization called Earth Guardians. We are committed to protecting the Earth, the water, the air, and the future of the children. Through Earth Guardians I am working to mobilize my generation, the “Change Generation,” to work together on behalf of leaving a healthy, just, sustainable world for ours and future generations. We now have Earth Guardian hubs all over the globe and our movement is growing.
I live in Boulder, Colorado, and in the last week I have been personally experiencing the extremes of our changing climate with severe flooding because of crazy weather patterns above our state. NOAA, our scientific center that sits up on the mountain above Boulder, reported that the storm we have been experiencing could be a 500 or 1000 year storm because this much rainfall in this short of a period has never been recorded in the history of Colorado. They shared an image from space that showed an unusual weather pattern above our state that was spiraling in two different directions, one pulling moisture from the Gulf Coast and the other pulling moisture from up North, colliding into this fierce storm we are now experiencing.
Seeing the magnitude, the destruction, the death and the damage from this unusual storm is a clear indication that something is off balance with our changing world, because of our changing climate!
Some people think Climate Change is something that is far away on the other side of the world, but truthfully it is something that is in all of our back yards! People don't see that we are all connected and that what happens far away in the world affects us all because we all share the same Earth. As our climate continues to warm and glaciers melt at unprecedented rates, oceans are acidifying and rising, small islands are starting to disappear, weather patterns are changing, and many of us just go on and on, blind to the future we are creating and leaving for future children.
A lot of people relate sustainability to things like alternative energy, solar panels, wind turbines, and geothermal, but I believe that true sustainability is the way we live our lives each and every day. It is a way of life.
We have to change our life styles so we are not relying so much on any source of energy. We have to change the fundamental beliefs of our entire society and shift towards a life style of simplicity where we don’t need as many material things, the biggest house, and more than one car to feel successful. This mindset has put us in the greatest man-made disaster in human history—our ecological and climate crisis. One of the biggest problems is that our generation is being taught to live the same way and make the same mistakes. We aren’t being educated to walk lightly and respect the Earth. Our disconnection from the Earth and our life styles are destroying our own life support systems.
Clean renewable energy is a great alternative to fossil fuels but as long as we continue with the same mindset of taking more and more we are always going to need more and more energy whether it comes from sustainable energy sources or fossil fuels. Something many people don’t think about is the amount of resources it will take, and the destruction it will cause, to put a sustainable energy infrastructure into place. By building more solar panels, wind turbines, and geothermal plants, we will still be taking more from the Earth than we are giving back! We can not continue living life as if there are endless resources.
Many people are waking up and realizing this crisis that we are in, but is it enough and will it be in time? Youth are rising up all over the planet to meet the challenges we face as the next generation that will inherit this beautiful planet. We have the power to inspire and create a movement towards building a sustainable, healthy, and just world. Together we can change the fundamental beliefs of our entire society and learn to live more lightly on our sacred earth.
